“True friendship is like a rose. We can't realize it's beauty until it fades.”

This beautful rose was right outside of my friend's house!

Roses can be any color except blue and "true" black.

In "current" years, Americans bought about 1,200,000,000 roses, which is about 4.67 roses per person!

California produces around 60% of America's roses.

85% of Americans consider the rose their favorite flower.

"Almonds, apples, quinces, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are all relatives of the rose."

The smallest rose bud is the size of a grain of rice.

Several people have called the rose "the queen of flowers."

"Columbus discovered America because of a rose! It is written that on October 11, 1492, while becalmed in the Sargasso Sea, one of the crewmen picked a rose branch from the water. This sign of land renewed their hope for survival and gave the seafarers the courage to continue on to the New World."

"Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes."

This adorable squirrel was on the tree right outside my window!

Squirrel's belong to the order "Rodentia."

There are over 365 species of squirrels.

A baby squirrel weighs approximately one ounce at birth, and is about one inch long.

A squirrel's brain is about the size of a walnut.

The average adult squirrel needs to eat about a pound of food a week to maintain an active life.

A squirrel nest is called a dray.

The male tree squirrel takes twice as long, as the female, to groom itself.

Special thanks to www.squirrels.org for some of these facts!

Polar Bears

Polar Bears are beautiful animals. I don't have any excellent pictures of this amazing creature; and none in it's natural habitat, so I won't post any pictures of my own this time. However, I wanted to call it to your attention because it was just recently listed as a threatened species in the US. This is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. It's good because it means this animal will be protected more then it would be. However, it's bad because this means that its population is not as stable, thanks to us humans. You can read more about this at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7401940.stm. Now for some polar bear facts, and a picture thanks to "First People - A huge site about American Indians."

  • Male polar bears have reached a height of 10 feet, and a weight of 1400 pounds! Female polar bears get up to seven feet and 650 pounds.
  • In their natural habitat, polar bears live about 25 years.
  • "Despite what we think, a polar bear's fur is not white. Each hair is clear hollow tube. Polar bears look white because each hollow hair reflects the light."
  • Polar bears have swum as long of a distance as 100 miles!
  • Polar bears have a 2-4 inch thick layer of blubber. This blubber is used for keeping warm, and staying afloat.
  • "Polar bears are mainly meat eaters, and their favorite food is seal. They will also eat walrus, caribou, beached whales, grass, and seaweed."
  • They can run up to 25mph and swim up to 6mph!

  • "Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. "
  • Females are usually larger then males, and live longer.
  • " Queen Alexandra’s birdwing from the island of New Guinea is the largest butterfly; it can have a wingspan of 11 inches!"
  • "Butterflies weigh only as much as two rose petals, but can fly thousands of miles."
